How to make a printable recipe card - Great tool for food and recipe blogs"

Image
I have been a food blogger for almost years. Over the years I  have often wondered why I haven't used a neat recipe card like I have seen in most blogs. For one reason I couldn't find one on blogger. So I tried to use WordPress and it became a big dead end to me so I decided to just stick with blogger. Then I came across Recipes Generator. The best thing about Recipe Generator is that it can be used in Blogger! Yay. What is more interesting about the tool is that the generated code is SEO optimized and supports Pinterest's rich pins! So it's really going to take your blog to the next level!" It is so easy to use. I mean I could use it, and that's saying a lot.  It can be done in three easy steps:  1- insert the recipe info like ingredients, instructions, cook and prep time into the appropriate fields  2- choose the style of the recipe card,  3- copy and paste the code into your blog.   T he recipe cards can be customized to your preference by changing ...

Turtle Conservatory In Lh. Naifaru

Image
"Guess what we had for breakfast today",  my sister in law and her hubby exclaimed as we headed for the beach  when were were staying in Naifaru last March. " Dhatha served turtle meat. ". "Its was good like beef!" I cringed , didnt want to know how it tasted at all.  There are few things that I cross the line when it came to food, fertilised  duck eggs  , Foi gras,  bugs and now of course turtle. I remember eating turtle eggs when I was a kid , didn't mind them but now after seeing them and hearing about the fate of most of them I had no desire to eat them in any form.  What I found ironic or even hypocritic was  while people in the island eat turtle meat,  there was a turtle conservatory  at the corner of the island. We visited the conservatory the previous time we went to Naifaru , that time there was a local guy who showed us around. This time around there were 4 expatriate volunteers who were working tirelessly when we visited . ...

Smoked Tuna

Image
During the first term mid term break , my husband and his three sibling and all the  families , headed to his island  , Lh. Naifaru.  This was our third visit and I have to come to love and enjoy my time in this small island. One of the things I love about this island is the strong communities and one of my favorite streets is Thitha's street ,where  hubby's aunt Thitha lives in an old run down but cosy  home. The street is old and narrow  and can see inside the coral walled houses . The neighbours are hard working  people and they chip into help one another. If one is making a big batch of masmirus , the rest of the women offer to slice onions and will sit gossiping  and laughing while busily slicing the onions. Once while we were heading home  along that street,  each lady from each house was sitting with a tray of moranga branches  busy pulling the leaves. Hubby commented  are you all cooking moranga today and one lady g...

Kulhavah

Image
Before I tell you what this post is about  I have to tell you about an old story behind the above picture.  There is a old saying in Maldives that when a person forgets his roots  they say just like " Kulhavafalhu Rani " or the queen from the Kulhavah grown area. Anyway the above picture shows a locally grown ? fruit? known as Kulhavah . It has a sweet sour taste and a very strong smell as it ripens. Now the story behind the food.  There was once this poor girl who lived  in an island in Maldives. These Kulhavah were grown in her house,  and she loved eating them. It can be eaten  in its slightly sour green green stage or overly ripe stage.  Anyway, one day the King discovered her and fell in love with her and took her to live in Male' in his Palace.  After years passed by one of the islanders went to visit the Queen, ( the girl)  and took a basket of Kulhavah as a present. She took the Kulhavah  and turned it around her hands an...

Kulhafilaa fai

Image
I  posted a recipe using Kulhafila fai , and promised you a post regarding the leaves , Kulhafilla fai , I used.  Ok, Kulha filla fai is a locally grown greens, which  grows wild around the beach.  It can also  be grown around the house but I have seen it growing wild  in some of the islands kulhfilla  spreads all over the place.  Its got a slight bitter taste, and is usually used in salads. They are sold in bunches and is finely shredded , mixed with onion , chilli and lime juice. The easiest way to shred  is to tie the whole bunch with rubber bands or piece of cloth at different intervals and remove them as you shred.

Culantro and Cuban Oregano/ Broadleaf Thyme

Image
A few days  ago I was in the shop next door . No episodes today but I came across this rather strange looking greens.  The leaves were long, bright green with spines around the edges. The packet said it was parsley (!!!!),  I decided to buy it , it was pretty expensive too. Came home with a bunch and googled parsley. But when I googled parsley I got either  flat leaf parsley or the curly parsley.. a fter much digging I finally came across across Thai parsley..... Culantro . Its most commonly known as culantro , has a flavor going towards cilantro rather than parsley but you dont get that heady smell that you get as you get in cilantro.  Its usually used in Thai food and more often in Caribbean food. (I wish they brought regular parsley instead.) Cuban Oregano or Broadleaf thyme Ok,  next up, Cuban Oregano .  Its also known by various other names such as Spanish oregano, Broad leaf thyme as it says here .When I was still in Malaysia my sister  to...

Tea Sampling

Image
A month ago I received an email  from Alison who was working for a company called Teavivre in China and said she wanted to send me some tea samples. You can get my excitment.   Gave her my address and two weeks later I  received a small parcel of lovely teas. I had five varieties, Premium  Jasmine Dragon Pears Green Tea , Yunan Gongfu Fragrant Black Tea, Oolong tea , White Peony (Bai Mudan) Tea, Bi Luo Chun Green Tea. Each pack had  tea leaves not bags,  The first one I opened was the Jasmine one, it smelled so sweet due to the fragrance of the Jasmine. Even Little guy kept coming in and taking whiffs of the infusing tea.  It had to be steeped in boiling hot water according to the packet, different teas took different timing and the strength of the tea was different from one another. My favorite was the Jasmine one , the black tea and White Peony Tea. Thanks Alison and Teavire . You can check out the various teas at Teavivre
